BHUTAN - Land of the Thunder Dragon

After centuries of isolation, Bhutan opened its doors to the rest of the world in 1974. With India to its south and China to its north, Bhutan is an earthly paradise with the Himalayas towering above it all.

Deep rooted Buddhist tradition and mythology are protected with pride by its peoples and play an important part of the Bhutanese way of life. The Bhutanese people sheltered their sacred heritage and unique identity for centuries by remaining shrouded in splendid isolation.

Bhutan is one of the world’s most exclusive destinations. Unlike any other, its rich annual festivals, know as “Tshechu” take place around the kingdom all during the year, always on the 10th day of the month in the Bhutanese lunar calendar.

Bringing out their finest jewelry and costumes, the Bhutanese people find the festivals a great opportunity to socialize, eat, drink and be merry. Visitors find them a photographer’s paradise with colorful costumes and exotic masks.

Bhutan perfectly blends its spiritual life with eco-tourism. This tiny country, about the size of Switzerland, still has more than 70 percent of its land under forests and more bird species than North America.

It has received numerous international awards for its stewardship of its pristine environment, including the Champions of the Earth award in 2005.

Instead of a Gross National Product, Bhutan’s index is known as Gross National Happiness, with environmental preservation being one of the five pillars of the country’s development philosophy.

Not to be missed by the serious traveler, the beautifully preserved natural environment, combined with rich cultural life, make Bhutan a Shangri-La.
